LC475 Power!

Ok, we are back! Some things are still offline, but will be back up soon. Phew. We had a power cut last Sunday, and the old Connor drive couldn't take it and died on me! Ak! Got hold of a hard disk this week, and just put it in this afternoon when I've had a bit of spare time. The server is now running Quid Pro Quo 2.1.3 which is what I wanted all the time, and the crash made me get off my ass and do it! Net Presenz runs the private FTP. Also, my Connectix Quickcam has arrived so I'll be hooking that up very shortly!!

I first encountered the LC475 at college. They had one in the Learning Resource Centre surrounded by lots of early Pentiums. I preferred to use this machine, though no one else did, so I had sole use of it for myself! I bought one cheap for myself early in 1997, just after they had been discontinued in September 1996. It came with 20MB, a 160MB Apple SCSI drive, an external 2x Sony SCSI CD-ROM and an Apple 12" RGB monitor. Over the years I've upgraded the memory, VRAM, hard drive, processor to a full 040 and I've also done a bit of soldering to boost it to 33MHz. These days, it serves these pages, and also an FTP. It is connected to the world via a ADSL 512/256 line.

Currently, the machines specs are as follows:

* Full 68040 running @ 33MHz
* 36MB RAM
* 2.0GB Seagate SCSI Hard disk
* 1MB VRAM
* DaynaPort E/LC-M Ethernet Card

What upgrades might I carry out in the future: Get hold of a cheap 128MB SIMM, fit a larger/faster SCSI drive and maybe find a Focus PDS Ethernet/TVout/Video card. (Yeh right!). I can't be bothered with the 40MHz speedup. Way too hard for me and then I'd definitely have to fit a fan (there's just a heatsink on the chip at the moment, and thats OK at 33MHz).

LC475 links & info

Speedup
Step-by-step guide to boosting your LC475, Performa 475 or Quadra 605 to 40MHz. I was unaware of an English site that had a method that worked. The only ones I've seen are where the clock can't lock onto the new frequency and therefore fail to work. These mods require the use of additional resistors. Thanks to Quadrajets on the 68kmla forums for pointing this web site out. Note Dec 04: This website seems to be offline so the link now points to archive.org

128MB SIMM info
It would be cool to have 132MB, but up till now I've not had the bottle to order a 128MB SIMM because of only specific types working, and me not being sure which. Bugsi provided me with the info he used when he bought a 128MB SIMM for his LC475. It turns out that Data Memory Systems stock compatible memory - Part number DM36-004 ($65.00) or DM60-015 ($69.00). Either will do. The SIMMs can be double sides, but must be single banked, if you want to buy from elsewhere. I'm tempted to upgrade, but is it worth it? Probably not. Why do it then? Coz you can. :) Even more fun can be had with the info from one of the sites below.

LC475 fanatics

Those Japanese are crazy guys eh? I was bored one afternoon, so I googled for Japanese LC475 sites and ran the interesting ones through babelfish and Google. I came up with a small list. The links to the translated sites along with my comments are listed below. There's some interesting stuff which I've not seen on any English language site. The translators do a shonky job of translating, but it gives you the gist, and in many cases there are photos accompanying the text.

How much mem?!
Addition of a slot doubler. I'd not seen these for the Macintosh before (maybe its a PC one?), but this guy has successfully added one. Throw in 2 64MB SIMMs, and he has 132MB. Impressive, but with the info about using 128MB SIMM's above, 260MB anyone?? :D

Faster!
Another guy who has clocked his LC475...

Faster 2
The first successful 40MHz speedup that I found. This one involves replacing a part with a higher-rated one from from a Centris 650. It seems to work OK though, and he's even dared go over 40mhz!

Silver
This guy has painted his a rather cool silver. Very nice!

475 server
A chap running an LC475 as a web server. Utilising a 64MB SIMM. Some nice screenshots of desktop setup & memory usage.

10 inch Pizza!
This guy has made his Pizzabox even smaller! Only a 10" now! :)

40MHz speedup
A guy who has performed the clock speedups. Click at the bottom of the page to see to 40MHz info.

40MHz speedup 2
Another method for a successful 40MHz speedup.

Two nice mods
This chap has got a 128MB SIMM in his, and (I think) was trying to add a 64MB SIMM in a slot doubler. Also he's modded it to fit a modern fast IDE hard disk.

More colour
Another painted 475, this time black. Not as cool as the silver imo!

A very nice 475..or is it LCIII!
Wow. Nice setup. This guy has an external CD Writer and disk drive attached. He's chipped it to 40MHz and added a pretty nice cooling system, for which he needed a different front plate: hence the LCIII plate! He's also modded the video for RGB. Sweet!

Other Stuff

This LC475's benchmark results

Quid Pro Quo 2.1.3 Quid Pro Quo 2.1.3 compressed with MacLHA. Great 68k Macintosh web server software. This machine will be running it again soon! This is the last version that was released before Social Engineering disappeared off the face of the planet. AFAIK, its not available to download anywhere else.

Part one of two articles from the IEEE's journal 'Micro'. Interesting stuff.
